Title: Steel and Stone (not married to this title, come up with something better) 3-5 players. Premise: This is a story game not about characters, but about a weapon. Who forged it, how it was made, for what purpose. Who used it, who was defeated by it, who sought revenge because of it? A hero is nothing with it, a villain no more than a lowly criminal when this is absent. This game was inspired by the film “Winchester ’73.” It is a Western about a legendary rifle, and the movie follows the weapon as it passes from one hand to the next of all the people who sought it out. This game is not meant to only be played as a western, but should suit many genres. It may also be a useful tool for DMs who want to have rich back stories for magical equipment in their games. It would also help his players engage in the creative process and world building. Game Play: Players need note cards and something to write on them. The players should come to an agreement on what the genre of the story will be: Medieval Fantasy, Western, Sci-fi, etc. This will be the backdrop and determine what the weapon is and who the characters in its history are. Next, each player should come up with a weapon that would be appropriate for the setting, and be as specific as possible about it. IE Winchester ’73 45LC Repeater Rifle, Red-bladed sword of hatred, Custom built slave starship, etc. Write the name down on a card. Write down 2 destinies for the weapon. IE This weapon will always be the death of its master, this weapon will defeat a dark overlord, this weapon will be destroyed and reforged, etc. The first player (randomly determined) chooses a spot light weapon, and writes down a detail of the origin for the weapon on a card (how it was made, where it was found, etc. ) the card is placed under the weapon’s card. Play continues clockwise around the table with the next player adding a detail to the origin. Once all players have gone, repeat the process for the next weapon until all the weapons have an origin. Now the players must determine which weapon is going to be the principle of the story. (not sure how to do this) The first player now will write down a hero/ villain who will wield the weapon. The name of the hero should be written on a card horizontally. The player should write underneath the character name how the character got the weapon. The next player can then either write down a fact about that weapons history with that character, or write a new character who will be placed next to the other character. Facts should be written on a card vertically and placed under the character card. The weapons that were not the principle weapon will be used in the facts section as weapons that were defeated by the principle weapon. If a player writes a new character, they must write how the character got the weapon from the previous possessor of the weapon. The game ends when all the non-principle weapons have been used and both of the principle weapon’s destinies have been achieved or explored. Make a mark near the destiny to show you that it is completed/achieved. Notes from play test: Richer RP element would be appreciated. Too much dead time at the table. “conflicts” or “Showdown” events should be added. Maybe require every other event to be one of these and roleplay the conflict or showdown. Maybe players write a character and the characters are trying to get the weapon. They are DM’s until it is their turn to make an attempt for the weapon. If they succeed, then the current character is out and their character is in. the old owner is eliminated from the game and that player must write a new character or just be dm or something.
